Summer Road Safety Warning

E-mail Print PDF

One hour after this picture was taken PC Mark Gonella (pictured below) stopped a Kawasaki motorcycle on the A64 bypass travelling in excess of 120mph.  The rider, a 51 year old man from Stockbridge, Sheffield has been reported and will appear before Scarborough Magistrates Court, where it is likely that the court will consider disqualification.

Safer_Roads_TeamMotorists are being urged to watch their speed as they travel around the district’s roads this summer – or face the consequences.  Road safety officers will be taking action against anyone caught driving over the limits – as they target residential areas during the school summer holidays.

Members of the Ryedale Community Safety Partnership are backing the North Yorkshire 95 Alive summer drink drive road safety campaign which will also see messages broadcast on local radio stations and road safety events being held in Market towns across the District.

The campaign launched this week at Ryedale House will see an increase in partnership working to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the roads in Ryedale.   “Operation Siren shows that drivers are still speeding,” said North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety Officer Susan Gallagher.

“It is vital drivers consider the safety of children and elderly people who live in our area - speeding and drink driving are proven to be major factors in road related deaths and injuries.”

The Partnership said the number of people that are injured or die on the roads can be reduced by following these simple rules:

  • Stay within the speed limit and don’t be distracted when driving through built up areas
  • Plan journeys adding additional time for any delays that may incur
  • Check the car is geared up for summer driving - keep the windscreen wash topped up
  • If you are driving stick to soft drinks and consider nominating a ‘designated’ driver when taking in visits to the pub or summer barbecues.

Young Driver Events

E-mail Print PDF

safer_ryedale_modified_carThe Safer Ryedale Road Safety Partnership is planning to run several Young Driver initiatives across the Ryedale District.

The initiatives are aimed at all young drivers and young people considering driving in the future and are designed to raise awareness of responsible driving and the dangers posed to the younger and more inexperienced drivers, along with providing information to passengers travelling in vehicles driven by young/inexperienced drivers.  The evenings will also cover street legal cars, where friendly advice will be given by local Police Officers on alterations to and the customisation of cars.  There will be a simulated car crash showing Firefighters in action cutting up a car to release a trapped driver and a hard hitting presentation covering the tragic loss of a young life.

The events will be attended by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, North Yorkshire Police and "95 Alive" Road Safety Officers.

The events are planned at the following venues:-

Malton Fire Station - Tuesday 17th August, 6.30pm

Pickering Fire Station - Wednesday 15th September, 6.30pm

Helmsley Fire Station - Tuesday 3rd August, 6.30pm

Kirkbymoorside Fire Station - Monday 9th August, 7.00pm

The events will run for approximately two hours, refreshments and freebies will be available.

Ryedale Road Safety Partnership would like to invite all young drivers and potential drivers to these events; however, parents are also welcome to attend if they wish to.  Please take this opportunity to come to one of the events and chat to the Road Safety Group members, it will be informative and although hard hitting it will be fun.

Safer Summer Wheels

Motorcyclists were being encouraged to ride safely on the roads of Ryedale.  Organised by the Safer Ryedale Partnership, the Safer Summer Wheels campaign held at Helmsley Market Place on Sunday 4th July from 10am-4pm and was a huge success with larger numbers of motorcyclists went away with safety tips, leaflets and freebies.  Mick Sowden, Chairman of the Safer Roads Steering Group said, "It is our aim to make the roads in Ryedale a safer place to be for all motorists, we encourage all road users to enjoy the experience of travelling the roads of Ryedale safely and responsibly".

Road safety has been identified as one of the top four priorities for the partnership and data illustrates that Ryedale has the fourth worst record of fatal road traffic collisions in the Yorkshire region.  The summer months attract motorcyclists back onto the regions roads.

The event was attended by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, Safer Ryedale, RAC, Scarborough Rider Training and North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety Officers.
